BIG MOUNTAIN SCRAMBLE
The trail run is 7.1 miles on a combination of unimproved service road, double track, and single track trail. The elevation varies from 1644 to 1157 feet and features varying surface typical to central Pennsylvania. Lots of rocks and roots, 2 bridge crossings, and one steep ascent.
0-1.2 miles The start/finsh area is at 1644 feet. Follow an unimproved service road (Pond Trail/ Big Mountain Trail) descending gently, bear left onto Headwater Trail at the large Y split, descending Big Mountain. The trail narrows slightly to double track and in spots, single track.
1.2 miles Hard left onto Homestead Trail.
1.2-3.2 miles Follow Homestead Trail with slight variations in elevation and terrain.
3.2 miles Turn right, continuing on Homestead Trail, parallel to Rt. 42. Some additional descent to the Homestead and Pogy Rd. Trail intersection. ** 2nd mandatory check in and a water stop will be located here.
3.5 miles Bear right onto Pogy Rd. Trail, then bear left at the y-intersection. Cross Roaring Creek on a single lane bridge-*caution at the footbridge exit, there is a large step dropoff. Lowest elevation in this area at 1157ft.
4 miles Right onto Headwater Trail.
4-5.5 miles The trail progressively narrows and becomes very winding and single track.
5.5-6 miles Right onto Corduroy Trail. Winding single track and second bridge crossing.
6-7.1 miles Right onto Homestead, quick left onto Old Field Trail-single track ascent scramble up to Headwater Trail, right on to Headwater, finish ascending Big Mountain, right on Pond Trail for 0.7 gentle ascent to the finish.
Course: follow red line out and return via blue line.
